Location / Region
Shimshal Valley & Shimshal Pass, Karakoram Range, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
The Shimshal Valley remained completely cut off from the outside world until 2003. For centuries, the only way in and out was via a set of footpaths constructed high above the Shimshal River that took three days of fast walking to reach Upper Hunza . Locals begged the government to build a road, but nothing materialized, so the Shimshalis spent 18 years, from 1985 to 2003, building a road themselves—a rutted dirt track that climbs thousands of feet above narrow gorges, traversing scree slopes, boulder fields, and rickety wooden plank bridges .
This isolation preserved a way of life that has vanished from most other valleys. The Wakhi people of Shimshal still spend 3–4 months each summer in high pastures with their yaks, goats, and sheep, producing butter, cheese, and yogurt for the long winter ahead. Hospitality here is not a performance for tourists—it is genuine. Visitors are often invited to share fresh dairy products and stories around the fire.
A trekker who completed the journey captured the essence: "I just randomly picked a tour... and luckily I picked one with rock valley tours!! I had a great experience trekking from shimshal valley to shimshal pass, even though it's a hard trip the guide and porters did a great job to make it comfortable. And everything led to an unforgettable experience in the beautiful mountains in Pakistan! PS, shimshal pass tour is a great pick with this company because all the guides as far as I know are born and live in shimshal Valley and makes it a great experience as you can visit there homes and see how they live there!!"
The valley is home to the Shimshalis, Pakistan's equivalent of the Sherpas, noted for their climbing prowess. Samina Baig, the first Pakistani woman to summit Everest, hails from here, as does Shaheen Baig, who started the local mountaineering school, while Rajab Shah was the first Pakistani to summit all of the country's 8,000-meter peaks . All Shimshalis spend most of their life walking some of the world's most difficult trails, taking part in the annual yak and sheep drive to reach the high Pamir pastures each spring .
The first few days on the trail are the hardest—the route climbs relentlessly up and down through parched canyons, following stone paths that the Shimshalis have dug into the side of tremendously exposed crumbling slopes, often narrow enough for just one's feet . The payoff comes on the third day, ascending into the Shimshal Pass where a high alpine valley full of meadows is surrounded by a distant amphitheater of glaciated peaks. Massive herds of yaks roam these pastures, and the azure lakes and relatively flat walking make it feel like emerging into a different country .
Alpine Karakoram Adventure operates the trek with local Shimshali porters, government-licensed mountain guides and an experienced kitchen crew—all from the valley or with many seasons on Shimshal routes. Logistics include full-service mobile camps, satellite communication, daily medical monitoring with pulse oximetry, and comprehensive first-aid kits. Safety is the overriding priority: daily distances and elevation gains are kept conservative, mandatory acclimatisation days are built in, and real-time weather decisions take precedence over fixed schedules.

Participants arrive at Islamabad International Airport. The Alpine Karakoram Adventure representative meets each arrival at the arrivals gate with clear company signage and assists with immigration and customs formalities. Luggage is collected and an immediate private transfer is arranged to centrally located accommodation. The day includes views of wide tree-lined avenues, green parks and government buildings. Participants are strongly advised to rest, drink plenty of fluids and avoid unnecessary exertion after long-haul international flights. An evening team briefing follows, covering the entire 19-day trek schedule, detailed safety protocols, equipment requirements, daily medical monitoring procedures, emergency evacuation plan, group expectations and any last-minute questions.
Early morning transfer to Islamabad International Airport for the scheduled domestic flight to Gilgit. When the flight operates, the journey offers spectacular aerial views of Nanga Parbat and many surrounding Karakoram peaks . Upon landing at Gilgit Airport, private vehicles await for the scenic drive along the Karakoram Highway to Karimabad in the Hunza Valley. The drive passes the Kargah Nallah Buddha rock carving and offers dramatic mountain vistas. If flights are cancelled, road contingency via the Karakoram Highway is activated with an overnight stop.
Full free day to explore Karimabad, the capital of the Hunza Valley. The town sits on a hillside above the fertile valley with views of Ultar Peak (7,833m). Complete any necessary paperwork and permits for the trek. Visit the UNESCO-listed 700-year-old Baltit and Altit Forts—ancient fortresses that guarded the Silk Road for centuries. Wander through local bazaars with shops selling apricots, walnuts, and hand-woven fabrics. Overnight in hotel with full facilities.
Rejoin the Karakoram Highway and drive north along the Hunza River to Passu, then turn right onto the Shimshal road. The 3–4 hour jeep ride is an adventure in itself—a rutted dirt track that climbs thousands of feet above the narrow Shimshal River gorge, traversing scree slopes, boulder fields, and rickety wooden plank bridges . The road is so narrow in places that just one jeep can barely get four tires on rocks. Only a handful of hearty Shimshalis drive these daily jeeps, and amazingly, in the 20+ years since the road opened, there has never been a single accident . Arrival in Shimshal village, a green oasis full of wheat fields and vegetable patches in complete contrast to the jagged and dry surrounding peaks . Afternoon free to explore the village, meet local Wakhi people, and learn about their traditional way of life.
Full free day in Shimshal Village for final preparations. Meet the full porter team, organize personal and group loads, conduct final equipment checks. Take time to wander through the village, interact with locals, and absorb the unique culture of this remote community.
The trekking adventure begins. After final load distribution, the trail crosses a footbridge over the Shimshal River and follows the valley upstream. The route offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and the powerful river below. Camp at Ghar Sar, nestled at 3,300 meters with basic facilities . The first day acclimatises the body to the demands of high-altitude walking.
Continue up the valley, following the river upstream. The trail traverses dramatic canyon sections, with the first glimpses of high peaks appearing ahead. One trekker described this stage: "The route climbs relentlessly up and down through parched canyons. The views in the distance of snowy Karakoram giants were enticing, but we were usually relegated to staring at our feet, as the track here was just an impossible series of stone paths that the Shimshalis have dug into the side of tremendously exposed crumbling slopes" . Camp at Wooch Furzeen, a scenic site at 3,800 meters .
The trail continues through increasingly dramatic terrain, crossing side streams and traversing steep hillsides. The valley opens gradually, revealing the scale of the surrounding peaks. Camp at Arbob Purian at approximately 3,930 meters. The evening light on the mountains creates a photographer's paradise.
Trek to Shujerav, a summer herding settlement at 4,350 meters where Shimshali shepherds spend months with their yaks, goats and sheep, producing butter, cheese and yogurt for winter . This is an opportunity to witness authentic Wakhi pastoral life, unchanged for centuries. The campsite is situated in a stunning high-altitude valley with panoramic mountain views.
The highlight of the trek. The trail climbs steadily through high alpine terrain to Shimshal Pass at 4,735 meters. The payoff is extraordinary—a high alpine valley full of meadows surrounded by a distant amphitheater of glaciated peaks, with azure lakes and relatively flat walking . Massive herds of yaks roam these pastures. Camp is established on the bank of one of the crystal-clear lakes near the pass, with spectacular views of Manglik Sar and other majestic Karakoram peaks .
Full rest and exploration day at Shimshal Pass. Wake early to see the sunrise paint the peaks gold. Walk around the lakes, photograph the stunning landscapes, and simply absorb the high-mountain atmosphere. The pass offers one of the finest and least-visited panoramic views in the entire Karakoram: a direct line of sight to K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, the Ogre (Baintha Brakk) and dozens of other famous and unnamed 7,000m peaks . Spend time with Shimshali shepherds, learn about their daily routines and enjoy authentic hospitality.
For those seeking an additional challenge, an optional ascent of Manglik Sar (6,050m) is possible. Manglik Sar is not a difficult mountain—it has moderate terrain and can be climbed within one day, though it demands excellent fitness for the 1,500m ascent and descent from base camp . The slopes are vertical, and the climb requires ice axe and crampons . The route follows the northwest ridge, involving walking on glacier and moderately steep snow slopes. From the summit, spectacular views extend to K2, the Mustagh range and many famous peaks . The round trip takes 10–12 hours. Those not climbing enjoy a second day at Shimshal Pass.
Say goodbye to the stunning Shimshal Pass and begin the descent. The return journey offers new perspectives on the landscape. Trek back to Shujerav camp, descending approximately 400 meters.
Continue descending to Arbob Purian camp. The trail offers different views of the surrounding peaks, with the satisfaction of having reached the high pass now behind you.
Further descent to Wooch Furzeen camp. The air becomes richer with oxygen, and temperatures moderate as you lose altitude. Tonight is the last evening in camp under the stars.
Final trekking day, descending to Shimshal Village. Arrive in the early afternoon with time to rest, shower, and celebrate the successful completion of the trek. Farewell dinner with the porters and crew, with opportunity to distribute tips as appreciation for their hard work and companionship.
Morning departure by jeep from Shimshal, retracing the thrilling road through the Shimshal Canyon back to the Karakoram Highway. Drive to Gilgit or Karimabad for overnight stay. The return journey offers different angles of the stunning landscapes you passed on the way in.
Transfer to Gilgit Airport for the flight back to Islamabad if weather permits. The flight offers aerial panoramas of Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram giants. Upon arrival in Islamabad, transfer to hotel. This day also serves as a contingency day in case of flight cancellations, which are common due to the mountain weather . If the flight operates successfully, the day is free for sightseeing or relaxation.
After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad International Airport for international departure flights. The Shimshal Pass Trek concludes. The Alpine Karakoram Adventure representative assists with check-in formalities and sees the group off.
Note: The Karakoram requires flexibility. Flights are weather-dependent, and road contingencies are always in place. Trek timing may adjust based on group pace and conditions. The trekking period is entirely dependent on weather windows; patience is mandatory. The first few days on the trail are the hardest—the route climbs relentlessly through exposed terrain where the track is often narrow enough for just one's feet . The payoff comes at Shimshal Pass, where a high alpine valley full of meadows and azure lakes awaits. The optional ascent of Manglik Sar requires good fitness and prior experience with crampons and ice axe. We plan for reality so that you can focus on the mountain and culture.

Americans often refer to the Nangma Valley as "the Yosemite of Pakistan." It's an appropriate moniker considering the majesty of the place, but might even undersell its verdant beauty. Here, twin 3,300-ft.-tall mountain ranges bracket a serpentine path that crosses braided streams, passes millenniums-old glaciers, and weaves through pastures dotted with free-grazing cows and apricot trees . In 2024, the valley gained international recognition when it was named to The New York Times' list of "52 Places to Visit," cementing its status as a must-see destination for adventure travelers . Alpine Karakoram Adventure invites trekkers to join our Nangma Valley expeditions for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with fixed departures scheduled from June through September—the ideal window when meadows burst with wildflowers and the granite towers glow in the summer light . Our 15-day journey covers every detail from your arrival in Islamabad to your safe return, including all permits, logistics, camping equipment, and professional support from Balti guides who have walked these valleys for generations.
