Overview
K2, known as "The Savage Mountain," stands at 8,611 meters in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan. As the second-highest point on Earth, it is widely considered the most demanding of all 8,000-meter peaks. While Everest attracts large crowds, K2 is reserved for serious mountaineers who prioritize technical difficulty over height alone. The mountain was first surveyed in 1856 and designated "K2" as the second peak of the Karakoram during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India . Its reputation for relentlessness is well-earned—every route to the summit is tough, the weather windows are brutally short, and the mountain offers no margin for error .
The journey begins in Islamabad with official briefings before a spectacular flight to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. From Skardu, a jeep drive takes you to Askole, the last road-accessible village, where the legendary trek begins. For eight days, you will hike along the Baltoro Glacier, a massive river of ice surrounded by the world's most concentrated collection of 7,000m and 8,000m peaks. The approach passes through iconic locations like Paiju, Urdukas, and Goro, leading eventually to Concordia—the "Throne Room of the Mountain Gods"—where K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums dominate the horizon .
Base Camp is established at 5,150 meters on the Godwin-Austen Glacier, marking the start of the climb. Most expeditions follow the historic Abruzzi Spur (the Southeast Ridge), first conquered in 1954 by Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli . The climbing phase is a rhythmic cycle of rotations, where climbers establish camps progressively higher on the mountain to acclimatize.
